Projects

This is where you can find a portfolio of the projects I have completed.

MLIS Practicum Internship

As an MLIS student, I completed an internship at the Burke Centre branch of Fairfax County Public Library.  For those 120 hours in Fall 2014, I assisted with programs, collection management, and staffing the info desk.  I was given a display area for the duration of my internship, and created four displays during this time.

In addition, I was available for one-on-one sessions with library patrons to help them answer library resource or technology questions.  I called it “Library Resource 411”.

MLIS Marketing Course

For this course, I completed a mini-internship on social media with George Mason University Libraries.  I investigated their current social media presence, and gave my recommendation for improving it based on what I learned in the course and my own research.  The Proposal is the final document I presented to the GMU Libraries Marketing Team, and the Proposal Deliverables document contains all of the research I did and all other information related to the intermediary steps I took while completing this project.

MLIS Information Literacy Instruction Course

One course assignment was to create and present a short instruction session on the topic and for the audience of our choosing.  I chose to create an instruction session for college first-year undergraduate students on how to use their university library’s online resources.  I used my university’s library as the example library.

Another assignment for this course involved writing an instruction plan for a course we could develop which could then be presented at multiple sites.  I chose to create a plan for a series of technology instruction courses for a medium-sized public library system.

MLIS Information Retrieval & Analysis Course

In this course, I learned about advanced searching techniques.  The course projects involved the creation of lists of content on a topic of our choice that would be appropriate for inclusion in an online research guide.  For one project, my topic was Medicine and the Civil War, and for the other my topic was hydraulic fracturing.

IT Capstone Course Project

As an IT undergraduate student, during my senior year I worked with a team of 4 other people on a capstone project.  My team worked with what was then called the Center for Global Education to recommend a new software solution for them to use to manage student and program data.

Miscellaneous Deliverables

At one time, I was asked to come up with an idea for a teen public library program.  Knowing how popular sci-fi books/movies and competitions are among teens, my idea was to hold a teen sci-fi trivia session.  The teens would form teams to answer questions about sci-fi stories, and the winning team would get a small prize.  I created a letter-sized flyer, as well as bookmark-sized flyers that I would have on hand to distribute at the service desks while promoting the program, as well as stick in the books that I would put on display as another promotional tool.

Other MLIS Course Assignments

The following documents are included as writing samples.  They are not currently included in the paper version of my portfolio.
